I just finished watching the movie Defendor and I just wanted to say that Woody Harrelson has been killing it lately with all his movies. He has been awesome.

Minus the Bear - My Time

Their new album, Omni, is really good. Not all the songs sound like this one. It's pretty all over the place, in the best way possible. Go buy it when it comes out in a couple of weeks.

Marlon Byrd

I finally made it out to Citi Field tonight to catch the Mets beat the Cubs. It was a decent game. Good weather, baseball, and beer. Can't go wrong with that.

Highlight of the night was when a group of guys in my section started to heckle Marlon Byrd, with the chant of "Byrd-Shit! Byrd-Shit!" These guys proceeded to get kicked out of the stadium, which then got the entire section to be rowdy and freaking out on the security. Good times.

Why Do I Keep Watching George Clooney Movies?

I watched 2 movies starring George Clooney this week. I'm not really sure why. I don't dislike the dude. In fact, I've actually enjoyed a few of his movies, especially the ones he has directed himself. Yet two Clooney movies in one week was a little overload.

I first watched "Up in the Air." I think I hate this movie. The first part was good, and I really liked Clooney's character. Yet he becomes soft throughout the film. He was a loner, yet he then invites his fling to his sister's wedding. That was crazy to me, and of course it ends up fucking him over. Starting from the scenes at the wedding, the film goes downhill fast.

The other film I watched of his was "The Men Who Stare At Goats." I have no idea what the fuck was going on in this, since I wasn't paying full attention to it. All I know is that Jeff Bridges was out of his fucking mind, Ewan McGregor jumped through a wall, and they kept on playing the Boston song, "More Than a Feeling." Whenever I hear that song, I always think of this:

Cursive - The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song

I'm going to start posting mini-reviews/reflections on some of the albums that really shaped me as I grew up. This is the music that I still to this day constantly listen to as it had a deep impact on me. Here it goes.

Cursive – The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song

In my junior year of high school, I was just beginning to expand my musical tastes from the pop-punk that I had previously obsessed about to the more indie-rock/emo style that was mostly popular among college kids in the Midwest who all wore shitty glasses and even shittier sweaters. It was less than a year after Cursive released “Domestica,” which I consider to be their best record. Yet their earlier record, “The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song,” is really the album that drew me in and got me hooked on them.

I actually stole this cd from an acquaintance. He was an older friend who was in college, and while I was over at his house one day I pocketed a few cd's of his that were just laying out not in their cases. The ones I remember taking were this Cursive album, a Texas is the Reason album, and the self-titled Planes Mistaken for Stars album. It was a damn good haul for me.

What really captured me about this album was Tim Kasher's self-reflective lyrics and his ability to deliver them in a passionate way, yet having a relaxed drawl to his voice. It was the perfect type of intensity that I was looking for, as the passion was the same I was feeling as a confused kid dealing with angst and love and society and simply just growing up.

It was perfect timing too, as Cursive started to slowly change in later releases as they became more self-aware of themselves. They recognized their own style, and even began to comment on it in their own songs. For me, this caused them to lose their genuine and unique qualities that they had. While I do still like them, their later albums just didn't connect with me as much as I connected with “...Semantics of Song.”

Californication - Season 3

I just finished the entire season 3 of Californication in one night. I couldn't do that with most shows, yet this is one of them that just sucks me in. I guess it's possibly the fact that I wish I could be as cool as Hank Moody, minus the parts when he is crying too much about the fact that his relationships never work out even though he is the one to blame.

One of the reasons that I do like this show so much is that it always has a good soundtrack, and inspires me to bust out some old music, especially Warren Zevon. The show references him so much, it's nearly impossible to resist putting on "Excitable Boy."

6am Playlist

I have been up all night for some reason that I can't really put my finger on. I guess it's due to my weird sleeping patterns of late, and hopefully my all-nighter combined with a weekend full of sleep and relaxation will get me back on a normal schedule. It's probably due to my addiction to Football Manager, and my quest to win the Champions League. A pot of coffee probably doesn't help either. It was worth it though, as not only am I kicking ass in Football Manager, but my ipod was right on point with providing me a kickass random playlist:

Band of Horses - The Funeral
Jesu - Weightless & Horizontal
Elliott - Leona
The Appleseed Cast - A Place in Line
Queens of the Stone Age - Make It Wit Chu
Groovie Ghoulies - To Go Home
Prefuse 73 - Pagina Ocho
Mr. Lif - Post Mortem
Hot Snakes - Paperwork
Lily Allen - Shame for You
Jawbreaker - The Boat Dreams From the Hill
Mos Def - Bedstuy Parade
J Dilla - So Far to Go
Ghostface Killah - Dogs of War
The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
Company Flow - Info Kill II
Piebald - Just a Simple Plan
The Strokes - Is This It
No Knife - The Red Bedroom
Orchid - Trail of the Unknown Body
Interpol - Next Exit
These Arms Are Snakes - Desert Ghost
Bane - Some Came Running
Girl Talk - Ask About Me
Portugal. the Man - Gold Fronts
And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Heart in the Hand of the Matter

Arshavin Questions Pt. 2

Russian soccer player/genius answers even more questions. He even busts out the music videos!

From mike81
My friends in Russia told me that you were also a singer. Is that true?
Arshavin: I recorded a single 2 years ago. “The football of my childhood” is a nice song about a boy with a dream of becoming a professional footballer.

From Nirosh
Hello, I am a Canadian, and a big Arsenal fan. I checked out the Arsenal/Birmingham game last October at the Emirates. And you scored the 3rd goal. Being Canadian, and being a big hockey fan, how do you feel about the Canadians dismantling the Russians 7-3 in the quarterfinals at the Olympics? Go Arsenal!!!
Regards,
Nirosh
Arshavin: How can one feel when the team he supports is losing?

From Matt
Hey Andrei, I have 2 questions for you
1) Who is your favorite player in the Premiership who does not play for Arsenal?
2) In your opinion, what is the most important attribute to have as a footballer?
Thanks very much, good luck with the injury and the rest of the season
Arshavin:
1. There are 2-3 people.
2. Speed, ability to see the pitch, technique

Hi, Andrey, I love arsenal and helicopters. My friend, Steve, said that he met you once and he said you were very nice but you smelt of coffee. Do you like coffee? He also said that he held your hand. If I met you please could I hold your hand, I promise it will be no longer than for 3 minutes. LOVE FROM ANTHONY, 28 ENGLAND.
Arshavin: I don’t drink coffee at all.

From Kebes
Have you ever felt like hitting a referee?
Arshavin: Sometimes.

From Lucky
Hi Andrey! You know I love football! And mostly because of you, I want to really thank you for that. But the problem is that I’m a girl, but I really love to play. A lot of people say that it’s a men's game. What shall I do? After all, I want to do it professionally. What do you think about girls playing football?
Arshavin: When girls like football, I think it’s ok. But I think that the level of women's football is too low to take it seriously.

From lozenchik
What do you think? Who plays better you or Igor Semshev?
Arshavin: Is it Igor Semshev asking? :)

From Lenchik
Hello Andrey! Are you a superstitious person? What do you think about Friday the 13th?
Arshavin: I don’t pay much attention to it; nothing terrible has ever happened to me on this day.

From IFFA
Andrey, are you touchy?
Arshavin: No

From Vitas
Andrey, what do you think about smoking. Do you smoke? If not, have you ever tried to?
Thank you and good luck!
Arshavin: When I was 15 or 16 years old I tried it. I do not smoke and I don’t approve of smoking especially by women.

From Anya
Hello, Andrey! Recently in an interview you were asked when the last time you cried was. If it’s not a secret, what can be a reason for you to cry? P.S. Do your muscles ache after the game? Your Fan from Chelyabinsk:)
Arshavin: There are many reasons why people can cry. Basically, it is so personal, that it is difficult to talk about it. Of course, my muscles ache after the games but as I become older, for some reason they ache less. Previously, I often had cramps in my legs after almost every game, now it occurs less frequently.

From Ibrox
Andrey, have you watched “The Lost”?
Arshavin: No

From Africa
Hi A.A. Do you approve of prenuptial agreements?
Arshavin: No

From Queen
Andrey, I’m curious what perfume you prefer?
Arshavin: Armani

From telekom12
Hi Andrey, do you think Arsene Wenger is a competent manager?
Arshavin: Yes

How does it feel when Drogba ties your shoelaces?
Arshavin: Funny

From 72994 356791
Why football? There are so many other kinds of sports, but, of course, football is the best. You're just great and all the girls in our class are just crazy about you! Your true fan.
Arshavin: I started off playing checkers. When I realized that I won’t be able to become an International Grand Master, I had to leave it for football.

From 72988 09101112
Hi, how are you doing ?????????? How is Julia, kids ?????????? I keep on asking you questions but there has been no answers so far(((((((( ((((( Please answer at least this one))))))) P.S. YOU ARE THE BEST ))))))))))
Arshavin: I’m recovering. I hope that we’ll have a good match with Burnley this Saturday at the "Emirates". Julia and kids are on holidays in the United Arab Emirates.)

Beat of the Day

I figured today was a great day to listen to The Clash. So far it has been a great choice.

Andrei Arshavin

Andrei Arshavin is a Russian soccer player that plays for Arsenal. He is 5'2''. He is a comedic genius.

These are actual questions and answers that he has posted up on his official website:

From mika61
Dear Andrey,
I wanted to wish you good luck in this difficult period for you. Don't lose your confidence, YOU ARE THE BEST, do not lose hope, continue to play your football and your success will come back ... Do not lose your motivation please, we're behind you to support you ... Do we still vibrate dear Andrey ! You will find the way of the goal soon !
Best regards - Mickael
Arshavin: Tnank you

From madam1kristinckao1ou
Hi Andrey,
We were asked to write a paper at school about some athlete and everybody wrote about you! My friend and I took information from your web-site and we got excellent marks! Thank you very much for the site and for your football.
Sincerely, Christine
Arshavin: I’m glad :)

From Sayana
Hi Andrey, I want to ask you, do you know where the Republic of Khakassia is? I live there, it’s Western Siberia, and its capital city is Abakan, I want you to come here, it’s my dream. But I’m positive that it will never come true! :(
Arshavin: Everything is possible….

From Olga22
Hello, Andrey! Do you have a personal shrink?
Arshavin: No

From veizel
Hi! I’m overweight. What shall I do?
Arshavin: Lose weight :)

From veizel
Hi, Andrey! I am 13 years old and I began to play football 2 years ago.
Do you think I’ll be able to become a professional footballer?
Arshavin: I do not know.

From honeygirl
Hello Andrey! My question might be silly, but the whole purpose of this site is to ask you the questions that interest us :) As far as I know, Orlando Bloom lives in England (I’m not sure where exactly) Maybe you met him somewhere? Well, I guess it’s possible)))

Good luck!
Arshavin: No.

From kostea
Have you ever been stung by the bees in the forehead or near the eye?
Arshavin: No, but I’ve been stung once in my behind by a bee.

From kostea
Have you cleaned your yard from snow in London?
Arshavin: No

From kostea
Andrey, how often do you eat onions or garlic??
Arshavin: It happens sometimes…

From iloveme
Andrey, what do you think people need pain for?
Arshavin: For people not to forget that they are mere mortals. Some people say that suffering purifies the soul.

From tasha100 know,
You know sometimes I feel so down. What shall I do?
Arshavin: Try to overcome this situation. Think that after this bad streak, there’s definitely going to be a good one. Despondency is a sin.

From KaTS
Andrey, please tell me, do you really like to answer this great number of questions from you fans? Don’t you feel bored?
Arshavin: First, I try to do it when I have spare time. Secondly, I see how many people are interested in our football and my personal life. You spend your time, I spend mine. Therefore, when it doesn’t interfere with my work or does not distract from my family's affairs, I reply. Is it good or bad?

From Ctepan
Hi, Andrey, I want to play like you.
Arshavin: Play then.

From RinaBeer
Hi. I am 25 years old and I’m still not married. My parents are very upset about this. They say I can end up a spinster. But I don’t want to get married yet. What shall I do? (Sorry if this is off topic; just want to know your opinion)
Arshavin: I think I can help you.
Step 1: You need to find a scruffy heavy drinker.
Step 2: Once you’ve found him, try to persuade him to “marry” you. I think that for a small amount of money, he will agree to fulfill the role of your fiancé :)
Final: Bring this guy home. Tell your parents he’ll live with you ;)
I think next time they will think better before forcing their opinion on you.

From 1009
Hi, Andrey! Some people say that the rain comes when the angels cry; some people say that it is a natural process. What do you think? Do you like rain?? Hi to Julia and the kids !!!!!
Arshavin: No, I do not think that it’s angels’ tears. It's simply a natural phenomenon. Although it sounds more romantic the way you put it.

From finta
Does anybody go in for sports in your family?
Arshavin: Me.

From lambada
Hi, Andrey, in what order would you place the following animals: a tiger, a cow, a pig, a horse, a sheep?
Arshavin: A pig - it will always get the last place! A tiger, a cow, a horse, a sheep. And I’ll repeat that a pig is always the last one, because it is a pig.

From samara4ever
How do you see yourself in 50 years?
Arshavin: 78-year old man, with aching legs and a glamorous walking stick :)

From didi
Hi Andrey, I bet nobody has ever asked you this and nobody ever will, I’m sure: what color is your bath sponge?
Arshavin: Blue.

From sgonch
Hello Andrey, thanks for the site.
The question is: I’ve noticed that you stick your tongue out during the game, why do you do this? On the one hand it is strange because I’ve never seen it done by any other football player, on the other hand the great Michael Jordan was doing just the same thing while playing. Actually I should say I’ve noticed that sometimes you behave on the pitch exactly like Jordan. What do you think about this athlete?
Arshavin: This is by nature. There are a lot of photographs of me with my tongue hanging out, but I don’t do it on purpose. I was always an NBA Chicago supporter. I think that Jordan is the best basketball player in history. Although I don’t think I have anything in common with him apart from my stuck out tongue.

From rita
Hi, what do you think about piercing?
Arshavin: I disapprove of it.

From Tanechka
I’ve noticed that Julia loves to wear glasses! Is that true? And what is her favorite brand? Why don’t you wear any sunglasses?
Arshavin: They don’t suit me. Besides I’m indifferent to accessories: glasses, belts, etc. As for Julia, yes, she loves glasses. I’ve never asked her about her favorite brand.

From lels
Hello, Andrey!
Thanks for your game!
I would like to know whether you like cactuses.
Thanks in advance ...
Arshavin: They are prickly; I remember we had them in kindergarten. We also had some at home. I didn’t like them then and I don’t like them now.

From Africa
Dear AA, having read your answers I’ve got the impression (perhaps I’m wrong) that you are bored of life!
Sincerely, Africa
Arshavin: I find life interesting.

From Africa
Hello, our AA! Do you believe in extraterrestrial civilizations?
Africa
Arshavin: Truly speaking I do not believe in extraterrestrial civilizations, I believe that we live on this planet alone, although my wife says the opposite. I do not like science fiction, fantasy books or movies. I’m indifferent to these things.

Andrey, do you need apples? We’ve harvested a lot of them this year!
My friends also have a lot of apples and they don’t take mine. But they are so tasty and sweet, especially “white juice”. It is a pity that they’ll go bad...
Arshavin: I love apples, but on the other hand, I think there are many other deserving people who will accept your apples.

Cabin Fever 2

I love Cabin Fever. It was gruesome, and funny, and sick, and demented. The girls were hot in it, the guys were funny in it, and some fucked up shit happened. It was everything that I wanted from a horror movie. For some reason though, they decided to make a sequel without the Eli Roth guiding it.

Bad idea.

Cabin Fever 2 tries to recreate this, but this time at a high school during the school prom. It was gory, which was cool. Really though the only funny parts were from Giuseppe Andrews, who was barely in the movie. This movie just left me disappointed. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't good.

American Idol

I don't really understand if people watch American Idol because they find it amusing or if they actually think the contestants are talented and that they will eventually become stars. Let me tell you guys something, the contestants might be talented kids all trying to make a name for themselves, but none of them are actual stars. This is true about every contestant on every single season. Kelly Clarkson might have had a few good hits, but really there is nothing special about her. I don't even know anyone else from the show, other than that hot blond chick that used to date Tony Romo (I think her name is Jessica Simpson).

Anyways, I did happen to catch it last week, when the contestants all did their own versions of Rolling Stones songs. They were all pretty much horrible.

To make up for it, here are just a few of my favorite Rolling Stones covers.

The Sisters of Mercy - Gimme Shelter

Cat Power - Satisfaction

Tori Amos - Angie

Rage Against the Machine - Street Fighting Man

Del Shannon - Out of Time

Social Distortion - Under My Thumb

The Sundays - Wild Horses

X2O

On Friday night I went out to eat at X2O for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. While normally I would rather have a chili dog instead of fine dining, I really enjoyed my meal. I started off with a shrimp risotto that was topped off with a lobster sauce. It was their special appetizer of the night, and it was amazing. Might have been one of the better dishes I have ever had. For the main course I had the grilled loin of black hog pork. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it was perfectly cooked and really hit the spot. I then topped it all off with a banana and walnut bread pudding.

Top notch dining!

Here is their menu specifically for the Restaurant Week.

Primanti Brothers (3.13.10)

Last weekend I tagged along with my sister to go visit her friend in Pittsburgh. My sister promised to buy me a Primanti Brother's sandwich and a case of Iron City beer. How could I turn that down? The sandwich was exceptional. I went with the famous "Pittsburgh Cheesesteak," and it did not disappoint. The fries and the slaw were perfect together, although the sandwich might have been better if the meat was shredded. Even with that small complaint, it still might have been one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. I'm looking forward to trying the other sandwiches they have.

Here I am about to dig into the awesomeness:

Enjoying the first bite:

Appreciating the awesomeness:

This is my Pittsburgh crew, outside Primanti's, after we all ate like kings:

Corey Haim, You Will Be Missed

One of my favorite actors passed away early this morning from a drug overdose. Corey Haim was a genius, and The Lost Boys is one of my favorite movies ever. It's a shame that he lived such a tragic life ending with his premature death, yet he left us with a gift of awesome movies. Lucas, License to Drive, Dream a Little Dream. All of these movies were awesome. And yeah, Haim was a crazy lunatic hooked on drugs, but I wouldn't have him any other way.

Corey Haim, you will be missed.

Piece of Shit in 2010

Jared Leto, you are a piece of shit in 2010. In fact, you are a piece of shit every single year.

Like the previous recipient of my "piece of shit in 2010," you actually did start off strong. I loved your first band, Frozen Embryo, and your Ramones cover of "I Wanna Be Sedated."

You were even in some decent movies, such as Requiem For a Dream, Fight Club, American Psycho, and Highway.

Yet then you started making huge piece of shit movies, such as Alexander and Lord of War. Worse than that, you continued acting like Jordan Catalano in all of your movies. You just kind of mumble a lot, and shake your hair around like a little girl, and then have these little freak outs that you do to show your depth as an actor. Well Jared Leto, I'm not buying your bullshit!

Worse of all, you have put acting on hiatus to play in your shitty band, 30 Seconds to Mars. I don't even know what to make of your band, other than it's one big piece of shit.

While you are a huge piece of shit, I am proud of you for finally coming out of the closet. However, that doesn't mean you still need to wear makeup and have a shitty haircut.

Pieces of Shit in 2010

Johnny Depp, you are a piece of shit in the year 2010. It's a bummer too, cause you used to be one bad dude. You were an awesome actor who made such awesome movies like Cry-Baby. You had a great start to your career; A Nightmare on Elm Street, 21 Jump Street, Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Dead Man, Donnie Brasco, and Fear and Loathing.

All awesome.

Then you became a fucking cartoon of yourself.

Sleepy Hollow, All those shitty Pirate of the Caribbean movies, and now Alice in Wonderland.

You might have made a few decent movies mixed in with those, but overall, you are now a piece of shit.

Stop over-acting. Stop playing these "goofy" roles that are all really just the same thing over and over again. Stop being a piece of shit, because you are better than that.

Or maybe you should just get back together with Winona Ryder. That is, if she ever gets out of jail for shoplifting.

Book Club

I haven't really been keeping up to date on here on the books I have recently read. I guess it is because I've been busy reading books for school. I have though been able to fit a couple of personal books in during my spare time. The most recent one was "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey.

I was a little late to get around to read this, simply because I can't stand Oprah and I really did not care if the author was lying or not in his memoir. It just really didn't matter to me. After reading the book, it still doesn't matter to me. Fabrications or not, this was an intense story of a young man struggling with his addictions. As someone who might rely on alcohol too much sometimes, I could easily relate on a level to what Frey was going through. This especially was evident with his relationship to his mother, whom he had a strong resentment towards even though she had provided support and care throughout his entire life. I also thought it was refreshing to hear a recovering addict's view towards AA when that addict did not believe in God or any of the spiritual or religious aspects that make up the backbone of AA and the 12 Steps.

Oh, and there is a guy in rehab with the author who hands the author a business card. On it, it says "John Everett, Sexual Ninja, San Francisco and the World." Genius.

The other book I read, that was extremely interesting and eye-opening, was "Party of One: The Loners' Manifesto" by Anneli Rufus.

Sometimes it is nice to hear another loner's views about enjoying one's own company, and how there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Olympic Playlist

I like sports.

I really don't care about the Olympics though.

Miracle on Ice.
Brian Boitano.
Kristi Yamaguchi.

I don't care about any of these things.

Yet since everything on television today won't stop talking about the Olympics, I spent my day reading a listening to some good music:

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Frank Black - Headache
Saves the Day - Obsolete
The Misfits - Wolf's Blood
Screeching Weasel - We Skate
Turbonegro - Final Warning
The Explosion - I Know
Avail - Black and Red
Discovery - Slang Tang
Have Heart - Song of Shame
American Nightmare - There's a Black Hole in the Shadow of Pru
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage! Up Yours!
Lawrence Arms - Someday We're All Gonna Weigh 400 Pounds
Dillinger Four - Suckers Intl. Has Gone Public
The Gaslight Anthem - Cassanova, Baby!

Even though my ipod was on shuffle, it seems like this playlist was predominantly songs I listened to when I was high school. My punk rock friends would be proud.

My Obsession with Senor Chang Continues

Daughters

Daughters have a new album coming out on Hydra Head, and I'm super stoked for it.

From their press release:

"About a month ago, we started to feel like we were holding out on all of you... I mean... we have been sitting on this phenomenal full-length for a while now... And needing desperately to have our prediction supported by a unanimous love for this record upon its release, we thought we would give you all a taste of what's to come... Download Daughters' digital single "The First Supper," (off the forthcoming full-length Self-Titled) on Itunes or Amazon now!"

The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You

I'm extremely late jumping on the bandwagon supporting this band, but I'm finally glad I have come to my senses and jumped on. While some of their earlier work is a little unpolished for me in terms of what they were trying to do, this album has really found a good balance to everything. I've been listening to it a lot, and so should everybody else.

The Grammys are really boring. I really couldn't give a damn about any of the artists this year. In fact, I kind of just wish Kanye and Daft Punk were on every year.

MLS

I hate the MLS...it's a fucking second rate league that treats it's players like shit and has no validity to it at all...but I feel like I do need to support a team. It would be St. Louis if they had a team, or New York City if they had a team (notice I mentioned City). Not the Fire. Maybe Toronto, or any of the Canadian franchises that are going to be expansion teams in the next few years. I want to be a Union fan even, but I could never root for a Philly team. For now, and to support the new stadium, it has to be this:

But my allegiance is going to change soon. Hopefully when NYFC joins up.

Lovesick

I really don't understand the music that is coming out these days. I feel like an old man sometimes, but seriously, what the fuck is this? This came out recently too, not in 1986 like you might expect. In fact, one of the guitarists used to be in Static-X. I don't know who the fuck that is, but I do know that they suck.

Howard Zinn 1922-2010

A great, great man passed away today.

Howard Zinn, the world needs more people like you:

Here is his obituary from the New York Times.

Before he passed away, he wrote a brief statement about Obama's presidency for The Nation:

"I' ve been searching hard for a highlight. The only thing that comes close is some of Obama's rhetoric; I don't see any kind of a highlight in his actions and policies.

As far as disappointments, I wasn't terribly disappointed because I didn't expect that much. I expected him to be a traditional Democratic president. On foreign policy, that's hardly any different from a Republican--as nationalist, expansionist, imperial and warlike. So in that sense, there's no expectation and no disappointment. On domestic policy, traditionally Democratic presidents are more reformist, closer to the labor movement, more willing to pass legislation on behalf of ordinary people--and that's been true of Obama. But Democratic reforms have also been limited, cautious. Obama's no exception. On healthcare, for example, he starts out with a compromise, and when you start out with a compromise, you end with a compromise of a compromise, which is where we are now.

I thought that in the area of constitutional rights he would be better than he has been. That's the greatest disappointment, because Obama went to Harvard Law School and is presumably dedicated to constitutional rights. But he becomes president, and he's not making any significant step away from Bush policies. Sure, he keeps talking about closing Guantánamo, but he still treats the prisoners there as "suspected terrorists." They have not been tried and have not been found guilty. So when Obama proposes taking people out of Guantánamo and putting them into other prisons, he's not advancing the cause of constitutional rights very far. And then he's gone into court arguing for preventive detention, and he's continued the policy of sending suspects to countries where they very well may be tortured.

I think people are dazzled by Obama's rhetoric, and that people ought to begin to understand that Obama is going to be a mediocre president--which means, in our time, a dangerous president--unless there is some national movement to push him in a better direction."

Community College

The Haymaker and I didn't actually move to Atlanta. In fact, I actually started school today at Westchester Community College. And man was it weird. First of all, I'm extremely disappointed that I only saw 2 goth kids today. I always wondered where did all the goth kids go, and I always thought the answer was community college. I guess I was wrong, and that saddens me greatly. Goth kids, come back!

I did manage to see a couple of kids that looked more like this, but this shit ain't cool:

Those kids are at least foreign, so they can pull it off. Rich white kids from the suburbs though need to just stop.

Other random happenings during my first day:

A random girl asked me how old I was. When I responded that I was 25, she responded "Oh, you are old."

I overheard a group of guys standing outside smoking, and one of them said "Hey, you know what's ill? Movies with Laurence Fishburne!"

Big Fan

I finally got around to catching this movie now that it has been released on dvd, and I don't know how I didn't try to see it in the theaters since this movie is one of the best movies that came out last year. It stars Patton Oswalt, who is always awesome, and deals with him being a fan of the New York Giants, who I also love.

Now, when I first got this movie, I figured it would just be a dumb comedy. It is not. So while I was surprised at what I was watching, it turned out to be for the better. This is an intense movie about a depressed human being who has only one thing going for him, his love for the football team that he supports. While watching this movie, all I could think of was how it was similar to The Wrestler, but better. Turns out the guy who wrote and directed Big Fan also wrote The Wrestler. Makes a lot of sense.

I know Patton Oswalt probably won't be, but he should seriously be considered for the Best Actor award.

Community

Although Aziz is the fucking man, and I'm really enjoying everything about Parks and Recreation, I think Community has to be the best comedy on television right now (also since It's Always Sunny... won't be back on til September). Last night's episode with Jack Black was awesome, although his parts were a little over the top. Can someone please find me the clip of Senor Chang coming into the classroom after his "death" and then him proceeding to eat Annie's brains and then play his rap song?

Also, have you guys noticed that Starburns is played by Dino. "YOU GOT THE GOODS!"

Buddy Holly

3am thoughts

This entire late night war with Conan and Leno is the most asinine shit ever. Conan, you are a funny dude. Leno, you used to be a funny dude. It's late night tv though, and I don't give a fuck about any of you. You are the major network's excuse to put out un-entertaining shit out that costs you nothing, other than the hosts' salary. Truthfully, I would much rather be watching a good drama at 11 than watching some shitty comedy leftover shit from Saturday Night Live, which I hate in the first place. Your monologues aren't funny. I hate the majority of celebrities you interview. And the bands that you book all suck. So fuck you Conan. Fuck you Leno and Letterman. Fuck you ABC or CBS or whatever the fuck you are. I don't give a shit about you.

Unless you constantly book Aziz every single night:

and it also might be good if you got MIA as your musical guest:

Southland

I just got done watching the pilot for Southland, on TNT. This show was originally on NBC or CBS or ABC, don't really remember, but it was canceled after the first batch of episodes came out. TNT picked it up, and after watching the first episode, I'm extremely intrigued to see where it goes. I'm sure the budget has been dramatically reduced since it's no longer on a major network, yet this show has extreme promise as a gritty crime drama that from the first episode, is going to deal with the lives of a few LAPD officers dealing with the conflicts of society in contrast to what is expected out of them as a cop.

Let's get this out of the way. I fucking hate cops. 90% of the police officers out there are dumb fucking assholes that just want to hold a gun. It's the Clint Eastwood psychology that plagues the angry white suburban youth of American culture, just manifested in a position of power who will always be beating a guy down. Even American politics follow this same ideology.

While I hate cops, I do recognize that there are a few, the other 10%, that are out there to make a real difference in society. These are the ones out there to protect the disadvantaged. These are the ones focused on the 'justice' aspect of criminal justice.

I am really intrigued to see a new television show like "Southland" deal with all of these issues. Hopefully it won't let me down.

Oh yeah, it also uses one of the best songs ever in it's promos:

More Cowbell

I was going to post this because it is all over every sports blog, but it's been a week and I am still laughing about it:

This is the second best cowbell video ever. And no, the famous Saturday Night Live skit with Will Ferrell isn't my favorite, but instead the Saturday Night Live performance of Queens of the Stone Age with Will Ferrell is my favorite.

Best of...

Every blogger in the world is currently putting out their Best of the Year Lists. Best movies, best albums, etc. Every list I read is basically the same, and they all pretty much bore me. Instead of biting their style, I won't be posting my 20 best albums of the year, but one album I did listen to a lot of was Set Your Goals "This Will Be the Death of Us." It's full of some pop-punk/melodic-hardcore goodness.

The guitar player in this band, Dan, has an awesome blog about all the awesome food that he eats on tour. Check it out:
