Can't Tell Me Nothing

Communist View on Sports

I just finished reading a really interesting book by Dave Zirin. It's his look at how sports, mainly Muhammad Ali and even the 1968 Olympics, have affected social causes. He then goes on to explain the role of an athlete in today's society where social equality is still a major issue.

We Like Sports

Baseball, football, the real futbal, basketball....I love sports. Except sports that only rich white people participate in. Lacrosse for example, or rowing. I also don't like sports for females. Yeah, it's sexist, but I hate the WNBA.

Anyways, I sometimes feel that my passion for sports should be redirected into something more positive. Noam Chomsky agrees with me:

"Sports keeps people from worrying about things that matter to their lives that they might have some idea of doing something about. And in fact it's striking to see the intelligence used by ordinary people in sports [as opposed to political and social issues]. I mean, you listen to radio stations where people call in - they have the most exotic information and understanding about all kinds of arcane issues. And the press undoubtedly does a lot with this...Sports is a major factor in controlling people. Workers have minds; they have to be involved in something and it's important to make sure they're involved in things that have absolutely no significance. So professional sports is perfect. It instills total passivity."

Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

This is the best book I have read in a while. Dave Eggers has written a great book that is not only a touching story, but also a story that shows the ineptitude of our government when dealing with Hurricane Katrina.

Generation Kill

I just finished up this HBO series that went somewhat under the radar when it came out. It was produced by some of the dudes from The Wire. Just that alone makes it awesome. I really enjoyed it, especially how it showed how short-sighted our plan was once we invaded Iraq. Go netflix it, or just watch this ending scene from it, which features an awesome Johnny Cash song that I'm sure you guys have heard before:

No Sleep Til Sobriety

Drinking alcohol makes most people fall asleep. I think it makes me stay up all night wasting time on the internet.

Is this for real?!?!?!?!?

This is seriously the dumbest shit I have ever seen, and I feel ashamed that this is even considered to be in the same genre of music that I listen to:

Seriously, check out this line up. This line up is everything that was great about being 12-15 years old.
I don't think I will end up going, cause I am pretty lazy, but still this would have been so sweet in 2000.

N.Y. Giants

I went up to Albany yesterday with a couple of buddies of mine to check out the Giants Training Camp. It was well worth it. A couple hours in the car with my friends, listening to good music while talking about sports and then a day of sitting in the sun, drinking beers, and watching more sports. That's a great time to me! Oh, and be warned...

Kenny Phillips, Brandon Jacobs, Justin Tuck, and Chris Canty are all beasts and they are going to fuck the NFC East up this year.

Angus

If I remember correctly, this movie was released when I was around 11 years old, and it was awesome. It is still awesome today, partly due to an amazing soundtrack that featured possibly not only Green Day's best song ever, but also Weezer's. Download the soundtrack here:
