Getting Shit Done

I have no idea why, but I woke up at 6:30 in the morning today after only 4 hours of sleep. For some reason, I felt completely refreshed. This, after I have been having a lot of trouble waking up lately. Anyways, this early start has motivated me to get some shit accomplished. I spent this morning downloading some music while I cleaned up my entire apartment, did all my laundry and washed my dishes, made an awesome omelet, and did some paperwork I need to finish. It's already been a good day, and now I don't feel so bad about picking up a case of beer and watching some soccer the rest of the afternoon. Liverpool needs to take care of business against Debrecen, but they also need Lyon to beat Fiorentina, which might be a tough thing to accomplish. Hopefully it all works out. Oh, and Sons of Anarchy is on later tonight!

Anyways, here is a playlist that I listened to while I did my shit:

Built to Spill - Cleo
Face to Face - Heaven (Psychedelic Furs cover)
Sufjan Stevens - The Black Hawk War...
T.I. - Tell 'Em I Said That
Jr. Ewing - Pre Summertime Blues
The Human Beinz - Nobody But Me
Ink & Dagger - Sarcastic Sunrise
Saetia - Postlapasaria
Dillinger Escape Plan - Baby's First Coffin
Thrice - The Sky is Falling
The Notwist - Off the Rail
Rx Bandits - Analog Boy
The Get Up Kids - My Apology
Dillinger Escape Plan - Pig Latin
Glassjaw - Trailer Park Jesus
Massive Attack - Teardrop
Funeral for a Friend - Rookie of the Year
Flaming Lips - Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
NOFX - No Problems

Cheater

Fuck the French

Update

-Sons of Anarchy is easily the best show on television right now, and it has in fact become my second favorite show of all time. Yesterday's episode was so great. Starting off with Jax and Clay brought together by Gemma's rape, the episode was super intense and didn't let off the pedal for one moment. That first scene, with Clay and Jax holding the baby, and talking about retaliation. "We got to kill them all." It was the perfect representation of how this show is dealing with the line between good and evil, between right and wrong, and between the violence and compassion that each character is dealing with.

-USA soccer is in a lot of trouble before the World Cup. Congrats to Greece though on qualifying. Russia though got knocked out, and they were my sleeper pick to win the entire thing! Oh, and fuck France.

-Albums I have downloaded the past day:

Denali - The Instinct
Planes Mistaken For Stars - Up in Them Guts
With Honor - This is Our Revenge
With Honor - Heart Means Everything
Glasseater - Miles Ahead of Where We Left Off
Defeater - Travels

Also both the entire discographies from The Appleseed Cast and New Found Glory (I know, I'm a loser that loves pop-punk)

-I've also read both "The Girl Who Played With Fire" by Stieg Larsson and "The Savage Detectives" by Roberto Bolano. Both books were excellent on many different levels. I already talked about how I like Larsson's work. Bolano's work was a great piece on this young Chilean-Mexican poet and his travels. I advise both books for everyone, especially you leftist-thinking radicals out there!

-I also found two $10 bills outside today!!! I'm thinking it might go towards a case of beer.

Summer Heights High

This show is awesome. Thanks goes out to Joey for giving me the heads up on it.

Fight Club

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Fight Club. This is one of the movies that had a defining mark among my generation, especially among every male that is directly in my age range.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. I have never been a huge fan of Chuck Palahniuk, or even for that matter, the director David Fincher. Yet at the same time I feel like they did an excellent job on the film, although Fincher's intense close-ups of a wire inside a bomb for example had not got to be as annoying as they are now.

My major issue about this film though is how so many of my contemporary males latched onto it like it was their bible. They used as a method to describe their own anger with society, with commercialism, and with capitalism. Yet this anger was misdirected. A typical white kid from the upper middle class that loved this movie loved it more for the hidden agenda that it explained their own anger and resentment with father issues. The film talks about this, indeed it was on large Oedipal story. The movie briefly mentions this as Pitt and Norton talk about who they want to fight. The book went deeper into it.

"What you have to understand, is your father was your model for God. If you're male and you're Christian and living in America, your father is your model for God. And if you never know your father, if your father bails out and dies or is never at home, what do you believe about God?

"What you end up doing is you spend your life searching for your father and God.

"What you have to consider is the possibility that God doesn't like you. Could be, God hates us. This is not the worst thing that could happen."

I guess my point is that while I do enjoy the movie, I feel like all the other guys out there like it for the wrong reason. Most of these people think the movie is badass. That it is about fighting and fucking shit up. These are also the guys that probably liked it best to see Brad Pitt with his shirt off.

Fight Club is a great movie, but it is about a character's misdirected anger about his father not being there for him.

Get over it dude. All of society is fucked up today, and your problems aren't anything worse than anyone else's.

Book Club

This week I have read 2 books, and thoroughly enjoyed both of them for different reasons. "Soccernomics" by Simon Kuper was a great look on how different stats are changing the game of soccer. Similar to "Moneyball," but for the world's game. I also read "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." I was a little late on picking this one up, seeing as how is it one of the highest selling books of recent memory, yet when I finally read it I realized why it has sold so many copies.

10 Years Ago on November 1st...

....the album "Through Being Cool" by Saves the Day was released. Still to this day, the album holds up to be one of the most influential pop-punk albums. It was released right at the perfect time, when the genre of music still held relevance before it was completely commercialized and bastardized. It was also released right when I was in the middle of high school, and I jumped all over it.

What the Fuck is Going on With Liverpool

Liverpool has lost again, this time losing at Fulham 3 - 1. Rafa didn't play his usual starting line-up, probably to save some legs for the big tie on Wednesday against Lyon in the Champions League. For this reason, he also took Fernando Torres out of the game when the score was still tied up at 1. The problem is, Liverpool is already out of the title race in the Premiership, and they only have a slim chance of even reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League. This has been a disastrous season.

Here is an idea of mine that needs to be done to fix this team:

1: Tom Hicks and George Gillett need to sell the club so the club can get out of debt.
2: Rafa Bentez has been great for the club and has accomplished a lot, but it is time for him to go. My ideal replacement would be Juergen Klinsmann, although that might be somewhat unrealistic.
3: Sell Javier Mascherano. This is a tough one, since I do consider him to be the best holding midfielder in the world. His value is high right now though, but so is his own interest in leaving for Barcelona. Sell him now before he forces his own transfer. Also sell Ryan Babel, Albert Riera, Andriy Voronin, Philipp Degen, and Andrea Dossena
4: Buy these players: Juan Mata (LW from Valencia) and Miguel Veloso (CDM from Sporting). They also need to shore up their defense and improve up top at striker, but this could be done by giving a chance to young Hungarian Krisztian Nemeth.

Anyways, one positive about this weekends lose to Fulham was that one of the goals was scored by Clint Dempsey. I know this is older, but Dempsey is still the fucking man:
